How To Use Your BlackBerry 8800 As A Mac Bluetooth Modem
If you are using Mac OS X and have a BlackBerry 8800 you can use it as a Bluetooth modem to connect to the internet from virtually anywhere. The process is fairly straightforward; simply download a file to your Mac, change a couple of settings, and you are ready to surf.
Begin by downloading the script. It can be downloaded here. Right click on the file, and choose Save Link As. Please note that while this is a simple text file, you should not open it with a text editor, as errors in the file can result. Copy the file to the root folder /library/modem scripts.
Now its time to make a couple quick software settings on your Mac. Under Bluetooth Preferences, choose Setup Bluetooth Device. With the 8800 turned on, pair it with the laptop. Make sure that the Trusted Connection option is set to yes, this will allow you to connect to the internet without having to enter a password on the BlackBerry. When done select the Pearl from the list of available Bluetooth devices, and then click on configure.
Select the option Access The Internet With My Phones Data Connection, and also select Use A Direct, Higher Speed Connection. Click Continue.
Finally, on the next screen there is a modem script pull down menu. Select BlackBerry 8800. Leave the username and password fields blank. In the space for the GPRS CID field enter: *99***1#
Now you can open the internet application. Choose the Bluetooth icon, and enter your APN (access point name) under the phone number field. For T-mobile users use wap.viocestream.com; Cingular users can enter wap.cingular. You will be prompted to enter a username and password. T-Mobile users can enter guest for both fields. Cingular users will need to enter wap@cingulargprs as a username, and cingular1 as a password.
Happy Surfing.
