Using Your BlackBerry As A Modem For Your Computer

It is possible with the newer BlackBerry models to use your BB as a modem for your PC. RIM offers modem support for the following models of BlackBerry:

BlackBerry 7130c
BlackBerry 7130e
BlackBerry 7250
BlackBerry Curve 8300
BlackBerry Curve 8310
BlackBerry Curve 8320
BlackBerry 8703e
BlackBerry 8705g
BlackBerry 8707g
BlackBerry 8800
BlackBerry 8820
BlackBerry 8830 World Edition
BlackBerry Bold 9000

If you have an older BlackBerry that is not listed above, you may still be able to use third party software such as SharkModem to install a modem driver and connect to the internet.

Begin the setup by installing BlackBerry Desktop Software Version 4.1 or later. This may already be installed if you have been using your BlackBerry for some time. When you install the desktop software, it also installs the standard modem drivers which you will need. If for some reason the modem drivers have not been installed, you can load them by removing and reinstalling the program, or simply choosing the Repair Installation option. You can verify that the driver is installed by clicking on Phone & Modem Options in the control panel.

There should be a Standard Modem option listed that is not the hardware modem installed in your PC. If your BlackBerry is able to connect directly to the PC via Bluetooth another option called Standard Modem over Bluetooth Link will be present. Selecting this option will allow you to connect without the USB cable. If none of the drivers are there, and you have tried to install/reinstall via the BB desktop software, you can also manually install the file (The driver should be located at C:\program files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers). The driver will be available on the Installation CD.

While still in the Modem Properties, click on Advanced. There will be a box that says Extra Settings. This is where you enter the Access Point Name (APN). You will have to contact your carrier for the proper settings, but two are listed below.

Verizon: Leave Blank
T-Mobile: +cgdcont=1,”IP”,”wap.voicestream.com”

Make sure that the BlackBerry is connected to the PC by the USB cable (or via the Bluetooth connection), and that it is powered on. Also, ensure that the BlackBerry desktop software is running.

You are now finished with the phone and modem options. Create a new internet connection by choosing Connect To from the Start Menu, then Show All Connections and finally Create New Connection. Choose Connect to the Internet, Setup My Connection Manually, and then Dial Up. You will have the option to name the connection. I suggest using the model of BlackBerry you have, eg BB 8703e. This will be the name of your BB modem. When entered, click Next and you will be prompted to enter the dial up phone number. The number that you choose will depend on the carrier you use. For example:
Verizon: #777
T-Mobile: *99#

After you click Next you will be prompted to enter a username and password before you connect. You may have to contact your provider for this information, but some have been provided below:

Verizon
Username: your 10 digit phone number @vzw3g.com
Password: your 10 digit phone number

T-Mobile:
Username: (Your existing TMobile.com Username)
Password: (Your existing TMobile.com Password)

Finally, there is a feature that needs to be turned off called IP Header Compression. Go to Start : Network Connections : BB Modem (8703e in our example). Under the TCP/IP Properties : Advanced menu, ensure that IP Header Compression is disabled. Also ensure that Enable Modem Compression”, Enable Modem Error Control”, and Enable Hardware Flow Control” are disabled.

Now that everything is setup, to use the Internet connection, simply click on the BB Modem icon (Called 8703e in our example) in the network connections screen. The PC should connect, and you are free to access the Internet from anywhere you get signal
